When It Comes To Leadership -- Everyone Looks Up
Ok, without going totally political here ...there has been quite a bit of talk lately in the media about how "words count" (in reference to the current President's unfiltered communication style).
This got me to thinking about organizations, and how everyone looks up to their leadership.
A lot of leaders rarely think about this concept -- what they do, what they say, and how they act -- count. Everyone is looking up for guidance and direction, and then typically model what they see, as well as what they experience.
It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. When people observe leaders talking, working, dressing, and behaving a certain way the thinking is "if he/she got the job doing this, I should do the same if I want to be in the same position one day." I’ve heard people say those very words!
As a leader, when you dress a certain way – people will most likely dress in similar fashion. When you talk, or act a certain way – people will follow your lead.
How you treat people, will set the tone for how your organization treats each other. Everything you do counts -- and then becomes part of the organization's culture.
As the leadership “guru” Warren Bennis once said… “In a way, leadership is a lot like beauty, it’s hard to describe, but you know it when you see it.”
This thing we call leadership is very complex. There are a lot of moving parts, and the impact we make as leaders is even more complex.
Leadership is very hard to describe, but when you see, and experience a great leader in action – it’s brilliant.
Think about it. When everyone is looking up to you, what do they see?
I would love to hear your thoughts.
